Jayden's Quest For Sight JaydenWe all see the brightness of the sun,
|
Jayden is like most 3 year old boys: he is cheeky, energetic and hates putting on his shoes and socks. He loves noise: singing, music, crowded places and the hum of a spinning washing machine.
What makes Jayden different and special from his peers is his sight impairment. Otherwise a healthy little boy, he is totally blind, unable to see light, shape or movement.
Jayden was born with a condition called Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) “Optic Nerve Hypoplasia refers to the underdevelopment of the optic nerve during pregnancy. The dying back of optic nerve fibress as the child develops in utero is a natural process, and ONH may be an exaggeration of that process. ONH may occur infrequently in one eye but more commonly in both eyes.”

Until recently, Jayden’s family had accepted as he grew from a little boy into a young man, they would have to teach and guide their special little boy through a world designed for the sighted.
Then they heard about the success of other ONH children who received regenerative treatment offered at Beike Biotech China, founded by the University of Beijing, China. (www.beikebiotech.com). The course of treatment utilises umbilical cord stem cells to encourage the growth of a patient’s own regenerative cells.
The family’s goal is for Jayden to see the faces of his family, and to be able to learn to read by seeing large written letters: “.....even if Jayden can see light and shade, it will all be worth it” said his mum.
The family require a minimum of AUD $45,000 to enable them to travel to the clinic in China and pay for the basic course of 6 stem cell treatments. The cost for the basic procedure is US$26,300 (approximately AUD $33,300), which includes accommodation at the facility. Every AUD $3,500 raised above minimum target will enable Jayden to receive more stem cell treatments, and therefore give him a greater chance of success.
Jayden’s family are unable to meet the costs of the procedure and airfares, and will be working hard with the help of the community’s generosity to raise the funds. The family's aim is to travel to Beike Biotech China later in the year for Jayden to receive as many treatments as can be afforded.
Well the fundraising went really good we ended up raising $53000. Which got us to China on 22 Feb we stayed for 8 stem cell treatment which ended on the 29 March. Jayden received 7 of the stem cells via IV and 1 via spinal tap we also received therapy 5 days a week which consisted of ... read more.
As to date we have noticed Jayden has more control over his eyes. We think he may be able to see bright light. Jayden seems to be communicating more since we have returned back from China. We will hopefully be getting some tests done over the next couple of months to find out what ... read more.
